Blackmore was a well known session player in the mid-1960s, playing on various sessions for producer Joe Meek. He played in The Outlaws and Screaming Lord Sutch’s Savages before joining Deep Purple in 1968. Disillusioned with Deep Purple’s direction following the Stormbringer LP, Blackmore recorded a session with Ronnie James Dio in 1975 that went so well he quit Deep Purple in 1975 to form Rainbow.

Deep Purple Mk 2 reformed in 1984 and lasted until 1989 when Gillan was formed. Former Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner was recruited into Deep Purple for the 1990 ‘Slaves & Masters’ album. Following the tour, Gillan was rehired, replacing Turner for the 1992 ‘The Battle Rages On’ album and tour, against Blackmore’s wishes. Blackmore quit Deep Purple again in 1993 after the UK tour. Rainbow was reformed in 1994, producing one album ‘A Stranger In Us All’ and touring until 1997.

Rainbow was finally disbanded so Blackmore could form his renaissance/medieval music project, Blackmore’s Night which continues to this day.
